AP 196: Political Canvassing in Schools

Background

The Division believes students should not be used as participants or as members of a captive audience in campaigns promoted by individuals, groups, or agencies for political purposes at the local, provincial, or national level.

The Division further believes students should not be used as message carriers or be exposed to posters and other materials for political campaigning purposes and that school newsletters should not be used to promote individuals or parties running for political office at any level.

Procedures

  1. The Superintendent believes having elected officials participate in student education programs has merit provided such participation is curriculum specific and school initiated. Examples may include discussions on levels of government, election processes, etc.
  2. Students and staff will not be subjected to campaigning by elected officials/candidates or campaign materials. Staff may use campaign materials for instructional purposes.
  3. School staff may not promote their political beliefs or opinions to students.
