AP 219: Course Challenges
Background
The Division believes that students, who can demonstrate extensive study or have acquired proficient skill levels in a high school course, may challenge that course. Course challenges apply to non-diploma examination courses and only to the school awarded mark component of diploma examination courses.
Procedures
- Challenges shall be initiated by the student by providing the principal of the school with a written request indicating his/her intent.
- The student shall provide evidence to support the application for course challenge. The evidence, e.g. a portfolio, statement of experience, certificate of achievement, must accompany the letter.
- The principal shall make the final decision about the student’s readiness for a course challenge in accordance with Appendix 3 of the Alberta Education Guide to Education.
- The principal shall assign the assessment of the student’s course challenge to a certified teacher with expertise in the area.
- The student may only challenge a course once.
- High schools shall include these procedures and locally developed policies in their Student/Parent Handbook.
- The following courses may not be challenged:
- Math 10 Prep
- Special Projects 10, 20, 30
- Work Experience 15, 25, 35
- CTS Courses completed in grades 7, 8, 9
- Learning Strategies 15, 25, 35
